artist's statement
The first memory I have of my exposure to the world of art is the many
hours I painstakingly posed as a child model for 2-D portrait artists in
the picturesque village in Surrey, England where I spent my early
childhood after moving there from my birthplace in northern England.
Many years and valuable life-developing experiences have occurred since
then. In 1970, I moved, with my family, to the Washington D.C. area, and
have resided in mid Michigan since 1976.
In
the mid 1990s – after a then lifetime of being intimidated at the
thought of actually creating art – I decided I needed to overcome that
fear and took ceramic classes at Central Michigan University (CMU). The
experience was profound; I was sold, and I’ve never looked back!
After completing my course of study at CMU, I developed my own studio
where I spend countless hours devoting my passion to clay. In a desire
to share my passion with others, I established ClayMates in 2004 where
students of all ages attend classes at the studio and experience the joy
of working with clay.
In recent years, my artwork has been exhibited in galleries at Central
Michigan University,
and has been featured in local and regional print media.
I enjoy participating in State art fairs and conferences, and present
workshops and demonstrations.
Because my preference is to not mass-produce artwork, each piece of work
I create is unique.
I am honored to have received commissions from individuals who admire my
artwork, and I consider it a privilege to create custom art for them.
As a member of the Board of Directors of Art Reach of Mid Michigan, I am
organizationally and functionally involved in its outreach programs, and
regularly participate in its art education programs.
My work is available for purchase at art stores in Michigan, as well as
through my website.
